What is #secrettraining?
Brandon Dwight
What the heck is Secret Training, you ask? Well, I'm not exactly sure who first coined the phrase, but I’ll bet it wasn’t me. Anyway, the story goes like this: Several years ago a friend and I were talking about how we were so busy and never had time to train. On that very same afternoon while driving across town, I saw him on a training ride. As I rolled by in my truck, I lowered my window and yelled out, "Secret training!" He just smiled back and gave a wink.
I opened a bike shop in 2005. Got married in 2008. Had my first child in 2010 and my second in 2013. As my business and my family grew, so did my responsibilities and so did my use of the phrase Secret Training. Even with these added obligations I still wanted to be fit and race my bike. I was also acutely aware as a late 30-something bike racer with a business, wife and two kids this was not the time to be a self-absorbed, wanna-be pro.
In an effort to stay in shape, I began to realize I was doing all of these little things to maximize the limited time I had for health and exercise. A quick run before work. Five minutes of stretching before bed. Another glass of water. Prepping my morning coffee the night before. Going to bed early. This is what I started to call Secret Training. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t live like a monk. Secret Training is also about having fun and enjoying life. Homemade cookies for recovery food = Secret Training. Ice cream with the kids after a race = Secret Training. One more Belgian beer = Secret Training. Secret Training is about maximizing your potential with the limited time you have while still having fun.Brandon Dwight: 2015 Master Nationals 40-44 Champion
I experimented with a Secret Training blog in 2017 and offered up free tips and advice for anyone to read. I was amazed how many people actually liked what I had to say! At the end of last season I connected with long-time friend and FasCat Coaching founder Frank Overton about taking Secret Training to the next level. During the past several months we have been plotting and scheming ways to help folks like you have your best cyclocross season yet. We will still be offering up tons of free cyclocross and fitness tips, but now you can purchase affordable, easy-to-accomplish monthly plans created by Frank and I. Our training plans are for beginner, aspiring amateur and masters racers who want to learn how to maximize training time and efficiency. Our plans are perfect for students or working stiffs who are trying to stay in shape and be competitive on race day. Oh, and have fun, too.
